What types of jazz are primarily the main instrument of the guitar?
I am a guitarist, and I'm exploring the world of jazz. You know sub-genres of jazz songs that have as major instruments of the guitar (electric or acoustic jazz)? I heard some songs with guitar and piano or string instruments such as support, but was on the radio, and I can not find others. So what is this music? What should I consider?
not sure, but the acid jazz and all kinds of jazz can use the guitar as the lead game. anyway you can check the large guitarests: 1 – George Benson (jazz guitarest of the 70). (Mixture of Jazz guitarest best of me with the rock). 2 – Earl Klugh. (N ° 2 after George Benson.) 3 – Joe Pass (from the old days of the swing era) 4 – Larry Carlton (he is the most famous white jazz guitarest now a member of Fourplay) 5 – Allan Holdsworth (play same as the glam rock slow). 6 – Lee Ritenour (Former member of Fourplay). 7 – Chieli Minucci (seen playing the jazz festival java same room Joe Satriani). 8 – Chuck Loeb (Latin Jazz) 9 – Jeff Golub (Regulation Jazz) 10 – John Scofield (Love your mix of jazz funk and rock). 11 – Joyce Cooling (Women guitarest pretty mild) 12 – trisum (budjana, tohpati &) jazz Blaw guitarests Indonesia. 13 – Wes Montgomery (jazz guitarest of the 50 and 60). 14 – Pat Metheny (cralton Larry himself). 15 – Charlie Christian (the best jazz guitrest 30 and 40). 16 – John McLaughlin (very changbale big style blues, jazz, world music). 17 – Al Di Meola (jazz rock). 18 – Martin Taylor (best jazz musicians in the UK) to buy the SACD sound very nice. 19 – Django Reinhardt (jazz LATN 40 years). 20 – Joao Gilberto (bossa nova).

3D $17.98 When one first glances at the cover of Casey Driessen’s 3D, it’s difficult to know what to expect. Driessen’s red hair is brushed back, and he’s wearing these funky 3D glasses with a “3″ on one lens and a “D” on the other. From this info, one might be prepared for spacey electronic music or perhaps a surrealistic singer/songwriter. But the final clue at the bottom on the cover photo is the head of a fiddle, Driessen’s instrument of choice, which may or may not lead one to guess 3D’s dominant musical style: progressive instrumental Celtic music. Listeners have probably never heard “Sally in the Garden” arranged with drums, programming, and an electric sruti box, though the addition of Jerry Douglas’ dobro, Tim O’Brien’s bouzouki, and Driessen’s fiddle add stable elements. It’s as though the players started with a fairly traditional base of acoustic instruments and then inserted percussion, progressive material, and the occasional electronic element to spice things up. Even on more conservative — instrumentally speaking — tunes like Driessen’s “The Confusion Before Dreams” proves quite compelling, and the vocal numbers, often a distraction on primarily instrumental albums, are fun. There’s a funky take on “Sugarfoot Rag” with Driessen’s ultra-cool vocal and Darrell Scott spunky guitar work. While a number of semi-progressive musicians like O’Brien have gotten lots of credit for pushing bluegrass and Celtic in new directions, the results (as with O’Brien’s dual release in 2005) seem rather tepid compared to 3D. This is fun music that will probably offend a few traditionalists while letting everyone else know that the old music can grow in exciting and unpredictable ways. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi |

All the Classics: 1946-1951 $28.98 This five-disc collection from London’s JSP Records brings together 126 sides that Lightnin’ Hopkins tracked for the Aladdin, Modern/RPM, and Gold Star labels at the very start of his recording career. Included are the Texas bluesman’s first hit, “Katie May” from 1946, “T-Model Blues” from 1949, and arguably the most startling Hopkins composition, the powerful “Tim Moore’s Farm,” also from 1949. Most of the tracks are Hopkins solo, playing either acoustic or electric guitar, but he takes a turn at the organ for “Organ Boogie,” a track that shows the same adventuresome liberties with tempo and time that mark all of his work, whatever the instrument. Since his approach and style to the blues never altered throughout his life, a case could be made that these first recordings are the ones to get, but at an astounding 126 tracks, this set is mind-numbing overkill for all but the most devoted fan. Rhino’s two-disc Mojo Hand anthology is the place to start for novice listeners drawn to this Texas legend. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi |

Assembler $12.99 Jazz fusion guitar fans will recognize Connors as that blazingly explosive and technically precise legato guitarist in Return to Forever who left after one release to pursue a quieter acoustic guitar path. Connors has always been ranked in the upper echelons of fine fusion axe-men. Yet the guitar releases from Connors have come slowly and been severely underappreciated. After leaving Return to Forever, Connors released three excellent acoustic albums in the ’70s, did some work with Stanley Clarke on Clarke’s solo releases, and played with the Jan Garbarek Group. Connors then returned to releasing hard-hitting yet elegantly soulful electric fusion guitar albums in the ’80s. They comprised a shorter, LP -length format, offering sonic snippets of Connors’ electric visions. Comparisons can easily be made between this release’s guitar stylings and those of Allan Holdsworth. This is not surprising, as Holdsworth has always sought that horn sound and flow of John Coltrane, and Connors, too, idolizes Coltrane. Convergent evolution perhaps? Connors has more of a rocking and visceral, edgy attack than Holdsworth. His legato phrasing is totally different, as well as his guitar voicings. Connors also has a lean funky, syncopated groove going on in his compositions; he demonstrates he is a guitarists’ guitarist with evident passion for his instrument. Assembler marked the final electrified release of this fusion CD offering of the ’80s. Assembler saw an initial 1987 release and then this 1994 re-release on the Evidence label. ~ John W. Patterson, Rovi |

It offers 3-position input attenuation switch (0dB, -20dB, -40dB) facilities proper output signal levels for optimum level matching to connected equipment. The BadAax DB-1 parallel outputs allow simultaneous connection to 2 separate inputs (such as to an amp and mixer). It enables multiple keyboard setups plugged into an instrument amp to be directly input to a console mixer by connecting the speaker outs of the amp to the console input through the DI box, thus eliminating the need for a direct box on each keyboard. Brasilianos $17.98 At age 30, Hamilton de Holanda is arguably the most virtuosic mandolinist in Brazil today, a worthy successor to the legacies of Armandinho, Joel Nascimento, and the late Jacob do Bandolim. On Brasilianos, performing on a 10-string version of the instrument, de Holanda fronts Hamilton de Holanda Quintet featuring Daniel Santiago on acoustic guitar, Andr? Vasconcellos on electric bass, M? rcio Bahia on drums, and Gabriel Grossi on the chromatic harmonica. Out of the gate, from the first moments of the opening track “Pedra da Macumba,” de Holanda and band establish their superior jazz chops, executing complex time changes and deftly navigating tricky melodic and harmonic variations. De Holanda is a speed demon on the track, spilling out rippling lead runs, which the supporting musicians have no trouble keeping up with. But technique and tempo are not the only tricks they have up their sleeves. The band returns to the quick pace on occasion (the back-to-back “Procession,” a Gilberto Gil composition, and “Forever”), but the bulk of the set is gentler and more studied, concerned with conveying emotion rather than impressing. Drawing on, but not enslaved by, the Brazilian samba tradition, de Holanda’s complex arrangements on the ballads flirt with jazz and other African-derived traditions while never losing sight of the music’s inherently Brazilian properties. But just to remind you that these world-class players are capable of dazzling, the album closes with the ridiculously intricate “Hermeto Is Playing,” whose title nods to the notoriously eccentric Brazilian jazz master Hermeto Pascoal and would no doubt please his outr? sensibilities.. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, Rovi |

Continuum [Revised] $22.98 Anybody who was initially confused by singer/songwriter John Mayer’s foray into blues with 2005′s Try! John Mayer Trio Live in Concert could only have been further confounded upon listening to the album and coming to the realization that it was actually good. And not just kinda good, especially for guy who had been largely labeled as a Dave Matthews clone, but really, truthfully, organically good as a blues album in its own right. However, for longtime fans who had been keeping tabs on Mayer, the turn might not have been so unexpected. Soon after the release of his 2003 sophomore album, the laid-back, assuredly melodic Heavier Things, Mayer began appearing on albums by such iconic blues and jazz artists as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, and Herbie Hancock. And not just singing, but playing guitar next to musicians legendary on the instrument. In short, he was seeking out these artists in an attempt to delve into the roots of the blues, a music he obviously has a deep affection for. Rather than his blues trio being a one-off side project completely disconnected to his past work, it is clear now that it was the next step in his musical development. And truthfully, while Try! certainly showcases Mayer’s deft improvisational blues chops, it’s more of a blues/soul album in the tradition of such electric blues legends as Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and features songs by Mayer that perfectly marry his melodic songcraft and his blues-slinger inclinations. In fact, what seemed at the time a nod to his largely female fan base (the inclusion of “Daughters” and “Something’s Missing” off Heavier Things) was actually a hint that he was bridging his sound for his listeners, showing them where he was going. That said, nothing he did up until the excellent, expansive Try! could have prepared you for the monumental creative leap forward that is Mayer’s 2006 studio effort, Continuum. Working with his blues trio/rhythm section of bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan, a… |

Crocodile Blues $16.98 Mali’s Samba Tour? has been hailed as keeping the spirit of the late Ali Farka Tour? alive in his music (his first global release was an homage to the man), and there are some similarities in his playing, especially with the guitar on track “Yermakoye,” with its spare, dry sound in the single-note picking. One of the great differences is that this Tour? draws his influences from all over the country, rather than focusing on the sound of a single area, as Ali Farka did. This leads to something more varied, like “Moussoya,” where the great Wassoulou singer Oumou Sangare lends a hand in the call for national unity. Working with bass, n’goni, percussion, and drums, Tour? shows himself to be a formidable songwriter and a seasoned performer, able to convey a mood. Above all, he’s a superb guitarist, whether on electric or acoustic, with very fleet fingers, but never flashy, every note contributing to the mood or the flow of the song. The instrumental “White Crocodile Blues” shows his prowess on the instrument with its simple, hypnotic lines, while on “Takamba,” his knotty little electric lines are a joy, and the upbeat, gently rocking power of “Bere? ” has an easy propulsion that sets the feet tapping. What this disc proves isn’t so much that he’s inherited the mantle of Ali Farka Tour? but that he’s emerging from that shadow with his own sound. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi |

Elko $19.98 Railroad Earth, the string band from New Jersey that has amassed a following in the Rocky Mountains, has made three studio albums. But the real test of a jam band, of course, is its live work, and Elko, Railroad Earth’s fourth release, is the inevitable double-CD concert album. The sextet has an instrumentation that suggests bluegrass — an acoustic guitarist, a violinist, a mandolin player, a multi-instrumentalist who plays banjo and Dobro among other things, and a rhythm section of acoustic bass and drums. But it is not shy about using amplification so that the stringed instruments can be heard over the drums, or effects more typical of an electrified ensemble. Thus, the guitar solos that decorate “The Hunting Song,” “Head,” and “Warhead Boogie” may be played on an acoustic instrument in the technical sense, but they sure sound electric, and the music makes use of echo and other forms of sound manipulation. Still, the overall effect retains a modified acoustic feel. It isn’t hard to imagine what records these musicians have on their shelves, say Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty by the Grateful Dead, Rubber Soul by the Beatles, John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan, and Music from Big Pink and The Band by the Band, and throw in recordings by New Grass Revival and the Rowan Brothers, plus, perhaps, the Waterboys’ Fisherman’s Blues. Lead singer and primary songwriter Todd Sheaffer particularly suggests the Waterboys’ Mike Scott in his nasal tenor, which listeners also may hear as resembling Arlo Guthrie, Tom Petty, or Rodney Crowell. The question of whether or not Railroad Earth can jam, if it were really in doubt, is swiftly answered on a 126-minute collection of 12 songs, five of which run over ten minutes each. If there is any discordance in the band’s music, it is between Sheaffer, whose songs, with their soul-searching lyrics, sound like singer/songwriter fare, and the rest of the group, which sometimes swamps those songs with their extended, explorator… |

Fear of a Blank Planet $24.99 Porcupine Tree makes a triumphant return to experimental, non-linear style with 2007′s Fear of a Blank Planet. Maybe Steve Wilson was afraid that the comparatively poppy Deadwing and In Absentia were edging too close to the mainstream, because he seems far less concerned with overtly accessible songwriting on Blank Planet. Even still, the cerebral, atmospheric sound on this album remains enormously compelling from almost the first moment. While there is no “radio single” on the disc — certainly nothing with a conventional pop arc like Lightbulb Sun or “Trains” — most songs transcend their complex structure and feel as provocative as any traditional rock tune. The aptly named “Sentimental,” in particular, features Wilson’s trademark lush arrangement with layers of vocals, piano, ambient synths, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, live drums and sampled drums — but cutting through its tightly contained mosaic is an expertly constructed chord progression that evokes a desperate sense of tension and longing, developing incredible emotional momentum as the track progresses. Blank Planet sounds like Wilson spent about half of his studio time on the guitar; it’s full of buzzy, meticulously distorted solos that you can easily picture him folding into the prototypical Porcupine Tree amalgamation of drum machine, organ, and synthesizers during many long hours in front of the sound board. The quiet, English restraint with which Wilson croons seems to have saved his voice from the decay that so many male singers experience over a twenty year career, and lucky for us (and for him), the style still works perfectly with Porcupine Tree’s sound. As a vocalist, he has an amazing capacity for juxtaposing cold, haunting moments against evisceratingly passionate ones, mostly thanks to the control he exerts over his instrument. Wilson’s clear, boy’s choir timbre sounds like a torrent of frenzy and hunger when he breaks free of it and explores the limits of his vox on tracks lik… |
