World Championship Air Guitar
The scenario is always the same. It's part and everything seems to go as planned, but the clock strikes midnight or so. Something occurs in the evenings, after a certain time, where people seem to let the alcohol completely take over your body and your personality. Do you think everyone is a good time until you look in the corner and shows a man, usually himself, from playing air guitar.
Think you must have experienced something traumatic during their childhood years. The rate is generally considered alarming, unbalanced, and sad. However, you can reduce your decision and take another look at the rate of corner. What could be the practice to enter the Championship side air guitar.
Oddly enough the concept, air guitar is considered an art. It is actually a competition held every year with the rules and regulations are taken very seriously. The competition takes place in a "Final Four" as a support system where there are several levels that must be overcome to achieve the grand prize.
First, it must win the regional competition. Regional can win a free trip, with airfare and accommodation included, allowing you to follow the end of the U.S., where there is tremendous competition among the regional finalists. His next challenge is to win the U.S. final, where again receive a trip to the World Championships held in Oulu, Finland. Unfortunately, the game ends here, because, other than fame and glory, does not seem to receive any prize money.
The rules are simple and explicit. Each artist will perform a song they chose, and hopefully practiced for sixty seconds. Then there is the compulsory cycle, which is where judges choose a song for you, and you have to play their song for sixty seconds. The trickiest part of the compulsory cycle is that the sixty seconds the song can start at any part of the song.
Therefore, it can be caught playing the end of a song not even know. The rules say you have to play an invisible instrument, the instrument must be a guitar (battery not allowed). In addition, air roadies are allowed, but must clear the stage before the performance starts.
There is a rule that prohibits keeping bands, so if you believed to bring your friends along for the ride, make sure they remain in the public and not at the scene. Performance is evaluated depending on their technical ability, the presence on stage, and Airness "of his performance.
Playing air guitar can offer a way of fun for the person who can not play an instrument real music. Whether people look at you like he was crazy or creative, it may be a stupid way everybody has fun.
World Championship Air Guitar could be taking things a bit too far, but there is always someone ready to compete to be the best at something. Brighter often takes the imagination of us and stifles our energies creative. The control of air guitar can help ensure that the imagination of return.

#3 [Bonus Tracks] $12.99 Like Beck in his ’90s prime, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names have no respect for musical boundaries. If they think a mixture of African-styled highlife-guitars, electronic beats, and ukuleles is a good idea for an indie pop song, they won’t hesitate to put it on record. The result? Wonderful. #3 includes former EP A-side “Funeral Face,” and just listen to the opening of “Peter’s Dream”: within mere seconds they combine Kraftwerk-styled percussion with a guitar that sounds exactly like Hank Marvin anno 1960, and it could hardly have sounded more right. On “Seems to Be on My Mind,” the distorted vocals and shuffly beat almost make them sound classic rock cool, before it breaks into a singalong chorus echoing the kind of pop like they used to make between the world wars. And so it goes on and on, genres and styles meet and ultimately converge through the unusually strong pop songwriting that always lies at the core of the album. No song gets boring, ever. Suburban Kids with Biblical Names sure do possess the geeky charm so beloved in indie and lo-fi circles. Classic one-liners like “there’s a Falcon Crest side to everything” and “I wanna turn all their dancefloors into a burning inferno of ba ba ba” are the stuff dreams are made of for any indie pop aficionado. But don’t let the spectacles and the wit fool you. There’s nothing amateurish about the kids’ performance at any point; in fact, the instrumental performances and the creative and crystal clear production are among the most impressive things about this album. Seldom do debut albums come as truly wonderful as this one. [The U.S. edition of the album adds two extra tracks: Love Will" and "Trumpets and Violins".] ~ Anders Kaasen, Rovi |

01011001 $19.98 With Ayreon, Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen has built a career around massive prog metal opuses with hordes of guest vocalists. Basically, anybody in metal who can hold a tune has sung for Ayreon at some point. 01011001 features Anneke Van Giersbergen (ex-the Gathering), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Floor Jansen (After Forever), Tom Englund (Evergrey), Hansi K? rsch (Blind Guardian), Simone Simons (Epica), Ty Tabor (King’s X), and Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation), among many others. These singers are the focal points of their bands, but in Ayreon, they’re merely characters in Lucassen’s rock operas. 01011001 is a sprawling two-disc set that one critic called “the longest CD ever made.” Indeed, the album spans 100 minutes, and feels like 100 years. It’s a perfect fit for the Inside/Out label — pristine production, byzantine songs that feel like full albums, hi-tech synths that wish they were guitars. Lucassen really, really likes his synths; in “Waking Dreams,” he entirely forgoes bass in favor of a percolating ostinato that suggests a beefier Kraftwerk. Electronics also pervade the percussion; “Beneath the Waves” is as if Alan Parsons covered the Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want.” Ray gun synths, operatic vocals, fake and real strings, and even Celtic melodies adorn this sonic mansion. Its ambition would be laughable if the record didn’t actually fulfill it often. Admittedly, such fulfillment was purchased at Guitar Center (or its Dutch equivalent); the record is most touching when it strips down to acoustic guitar on the gorgeously compact “Web of Lies.” These two discs, subtitled Planet Y and Earth, are about humanity’s disconnect with itself and destruction of the planet. But that’s really not important. Music this over the top almost defies criticism. Reviewing it is like reviewing the world’s tallest building. It doesn’t care; it just goes on and on. ~ Cosmo Lee, Rovi |

12 Angry Months $12.99 Scott Lucas of Local H is far from the first musician to find inspiration in a bad romantic breakup, and he’s just one of many who has written a whole album about losing someone who was once the girl of his dreams, but the group’s seventh full-length album, 12 Angry Months, is their most ambitious and adventurous work to date, finding new musical avenues to express the many emotions that emerge in the wake of a busted relationship. 12 Angry Months opens with an unusually subdued acoustic guitar and piano prelude before the electric guitars kick in and Lucas and his ex battle over how to divvy up their mutual friends and the CD collection (“Where’s all my Kyuss records? You never liked ‘em until you met me!”), and though Lucas delivers plenty of his trademark meat-and-potatoes hard rock guitar on this album, he also shows a greater willingness to explore other textures. “White Belt Boys” and “Taxi-Cabs” flirt with minor-key Eastern modes (though they seem to be drawn from Led Zeppelin rather than a new interest in world music), “The Summer of Boats” and “Simple Pleas” are rare examples of “power ballads” that sound heartfelt and dramatic rather than maudlin, the sarcastic pop accents lurking below of the surface of “Jesus Christ! Did You See the Size of That Sperm Whale?” add to its bite, and the epic-scaled closer, “Hand to Mouth,” achieves a fitting sonic grandeur. Lyrically, 12 Angry Months runs the emotional gamut of post-breakup resentment, from ranking out on your ex’s new boyfriend (“BMW Man”), wishing misery upon her and her friends (“White Belt Boys”) and bitter resignation that the affair was doomed to failure (“Twenty-Four Hour Breakup Session”) to self-loathing (“Jesus Christ! Did You See…”), foolishly pondering another chance (“Blur”), and clumsily moving on (“Taxi-Cabs”). 12 Angry Months is often funny but just as often cuts deep enough to sting for anyone who has ever has a less-than-graceful breakup (i.e. nearly everyb… |

A Cruel World $14.99 Bloodsimple features ex-Vision of Disorder members Tim Williams (vocals) and Mike Kennedy (guitar). Cruel World, the band’s debut, is also the first release from Mudvayne frontman Chad Grey’s Bullygoat imprint (via Warner). Mudvayne’s sound is definitely a reference point for Bloodsimple, as is later VOD. As heavy as much of Cruel World hits — the killer opener “Straight to Hate,” “Blood In Blood Out”‘s updated thrash swagger — it also makes room for things like “Running from Nothing,” which links curse words and screaming with atmospheric, even melodic singing. In this way it’s a pretty typical 2000s alternative metal record. The rhythm section stops and starts with Tool precision, the guitars are mixed to maximum thickness, and Williams tears at his soul with lyrics about insanity, broken teeth, and waging war on the weak. Williams is certainly committed to his rage — “Path to Prevail” begins with a banshee howl to wake the dead. It’s Cruel World’s strongest track, since its lead riff has enough room for melody without losing that viciously rewarding edge. The breaks suggest Disturbed, the drums pound like armies marching out of hell, and “You’re full of shit/I vow now to return/I’ve already been your God” is a chorus tailor-made for destroying Playstation opponents. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi |

Accelerated Evolution [Bonus CD] $19.98 When Nirvana and Pearl Jam exploded commercially in the early ’90s, there was a real “out with the old, in with the new” attitude in the rock world — out with pop-metal, hair bands, fantasy metal and ’80s-style arena rock, in with all things alternative. Some ’80s favorites were still considered modern and cutting edge after that Nirvana/Pearl Jam upheaval — Metallica, for example — although many ’80s bands suddenly found themselves being described as dated or old-school. Nonetheless, some alt rock albums have longed for that hooky, shiny, big-sounding ’80s pop-metal/arena rock gloss; Hole’s Celebrity Skin (1999) and Veruca Salt’s Eight Arms to Hold You (1997) were alt rock treasures that, in their own way, seemed to be saying, “Hey, let’s not forget everything the ’70s and ’80s stood for.” And similarly, singer/guitarist Devin Townsend’s Accelerated Evolution is an alt rock disc that successfully draws on different eras. This album isn’t flat-out retro; the Canadian rocker provides enough downtuned guitars to put this CD in the alt rock category. And yet, Accelerated Evolution has a big sound that suggests the pop-metal, arena rock and hard rock of the ’70s and ’80s — big melodies, big harmonies, big guitars, big vocals, big production. Yes, Townsend provides downtuned guitar and chugging guitar, but he also provides a lot of gloss and brightness — the sort of gloss and brightness that ’70s and ’80s arena rockers brought to the studio. Another thing about Townsend that recalls those decades is his sense of pop/rock craftsmanship; Accelerated Evolution is extremely listenable. The fact that Townsend’s credits includes Steve Vai and Front Line Assembly tells you how far-reaching and eclectic he is, and it also explains how he manages to make a blend of ’70s/’80s arena rock/pop-metal and ’90s/2000s alt rock sound so logical and coherent on this excellent CD. [A special edition of the album featured three additional tracks on a separate disc.] ~ Alex Hender… |

Adventures in Coverland $11.99 This collection of cover songs (and two originals — one new song, and one acoustic version of “BB,” the opening track from 2009′s Trio B.C.) provides some clues as to Girl in a Coma’s influences, as such sets often do. The Beatles pop up, as do Patsy Cline, Ritchie Valens, Buffalo Springfield, David Bowie, Joy Division, the Velvet Underground, and? Selena? Yes, Adventures in Coverland opens with a punked-up tear through the late tejano vocalist’s “Si Una Vez.” Unfortunately, that energy isn’t sustained throughout the CD (eight of the tracks from which originally appeared on three limited-edition 7″ singles). Their version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is practically metal, but they strip Joy Division’s “Transmission” down to acoustic guitars, atmospheric piano, and a kick drum instead of preserving its shout-along power. Frontwoman Nina Diaz gets all Morrissey-esque on David Bowie’s “As the World Falls Down,” but when the band turns Ritchie Valens’ “Come on, Let’s Go” into a rave-up reminiscent of Ramones covers like “Let’s Dance” and “California Sun,” the raw adrenaline that launches from the speakers is utterly undeniable, and shows Girl in a Coma at their best, mixing rockabilly swing, punk ferocity, and Latin soul in just over two minutes. Similarly, they approach the power of X’s “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes” on their fuzzed-out but still two-stepping version of Patsy Cline’s “Walkin’ After Midnight,” and the ’60s-style garage power of their take on the Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale” makes it sound like a Pandoras or early Bangles tune. The lone new original, “Yo Oigo,” is a showcase for Diaz’s scorching Telecaster. All in all, this is more than a holding action between “real” Girl in a Coma albums — they’ve chosen good songs, and put their own spin on them. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi |

All the Pretty Horses [Original Soundtrack] $14.99 Sure, the movie was no Sling Blade, even if directed by the one and only Billy Bob Thornton. But let’s face it, they took two hours outta the thing! All the griping aside, the score, composed and performed by country music renaissance man Marty Stuart — and his collaborating band members Kristin Wilkinson and Larry Paxton — is something else completely. Comprised of 23 tracks, Stuart’s score does sound like soundtrack music, but no matter. He and his sextet have taken the drama of the film’s text and created an aural theater of the American West. At the heart of each theme is a core of mandolin, viola, bass, guitar, accordion, piano, and percussion. Orchestrations ride ambiently in the background, highlighting tension and drama. In “Edge of the World,” cornets play at the music’s outermost edge, hinting at a red Sonoran sunset. In another place, guitars, both strummed and soloed upon, create an impressionistic picture of a campfire jam session. Elsewhere, “Strawberry Tango, Part One and Two” features a full horn and string section painting the atmosphere at a cantina dance from its wild beginnings until its sultry ending. Daniel Lanois, who scored Thornton’s Sling Blade (well, it actually sounds as if he threw a bunch of leftover studio bits on a tape for the movie), makes a return appearance here with an actual song. The track “Porque” features the stirring vocals of Raul Malo of the Mavericks, who contributed the lyrics to the selection. It’s a sad, romantic ballad. Lost love drips from the cowboy’s hat, regret drapes itself in tears in his shaded eyes, and he stands out in the rain singing to no one. Also, homage is paid to Stuart’s greatest influence and benefactor, the daddy of bluegrass music himself, Bill Monroe. His “My Last Days on Earth” is included here. (Everybody knows nobody was listening to bluegrass music in Texas or Mexico in the late ’30s.) The only real complaint about this gorgeous score is its brevity. Clocking in at under 50 minute… |

Anthology $25.99 Sony’s third anthology of Return to Forever guitarist Al di Meola’s Columbia Records years hits most of the bases and scores extra points by adding four previously unavailable live tracks that account for a whopping 40 minutes of playing time. The double disc features 16 songs from di Meola’s seven albums for the label from 1975-1983 and successfully covers highlights from the jazz guitar fusionist’s eclectic styles during his early career. Only 22 when his first solo album, Land of the Midnight Sun, was released, di Meola had already cut his teeth for three years with Chick Corea’s Return to Forever, and although his style owed a lot to Corea’s vision, he had already defined his sound. The guitarist’s precise attack, staccato playing, furious speed, and heavily percussive arrangements would serve him well throughout these formative years. Even though he was often criticized for playing too many notes (just listen to the frantic, head-spinning beginning of “Suite: Golden Dawn” from Land of the Midnight Sun), di Meola’s more subtle roots in Latin, flamenco, funk, and rock are evident in almost all of his work. He even incorporates strains of the world music that later became the dominant force in his recordings. Although there is evidence of a softer approach, the majority of Anthology concentrates on the hyperactive fret-hopping ability of the young di Meola as he tries to prove he’s the fastest guitarist in the world. Even on the acoustic, newly released live tracks from 1978 like the 11-minute “Medley: Short Tales from the Black Forest/Fantasia Suite for Two Guitars,” the results are anything but laid-back. Oddly, the disc does not include anything from di Meola’s two predominately unplugged trio albums, when he partnered with John McLaughlin and Paco de Luc? a for a tremendously successful guitar summit. With three tracks off Tour de Force: Live and another four from concerts in 1982 and 1978, this disc includes almost an hour of di Meola and his versatile… |

B-Sides [EP] $13.96 After wooing critics in 2003 with his stunning debut album, O, Damien Rice built upon his growing success with this quaint B-sides collection. This EP features seven previously unreleased songs that are soul-stirringly classic of the Irish singer/songwriter. On record, Rice is a convincing poet with a wild imagination of love and wonder, but in a live setting, he is much more provocative and passionate. On-stage is where he truly shines. Songs such as the thorny relationship account of “The Professor & la Fille Danse” and the acoustic guitar waltz of “Delicate” are evident of Rice’s rich talent as a singer, but also as a storyteller. B-Sides is exactly streamlined in production, so much so that a listener can be left in their own world when listening to Rice’s music. Demo versions of “Lonelily” and “Volcano” add to that particular dynamic; however, the layered and dark falsetto-driven “Moody Mooday” is what makes B-Sides a must have. Die-hard fans and completists will most likely have this track in their collection, for it’s originally featured on the “Cannonball, Pt. 1″ single. But with that aside, Rice’s and Lisa Hannigan’s vocals weave around each other like magic, and electric guitars and Vyvienne Long’s brooding cello arrangements find their place in this amazing chant-like number. If you enjoyed Rice’s unflinching honesty on O, B-Sides will take you there once again. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi |

Da Doo Ron Ron: The Very Best of the Crystals $12.99 When Phil Spector formed his own label, Philles Records, in 1961, he had written, played guitar, and sung backup vocals on 1958? s ? To Know Him Is to Love Him? (which hit the top of the pop charts that year) as part of the Teddy Bears, and worked for a time as part of the production team for Leiber & Stoller, co-writing ? Spanish Harlem? for Ben E. King and playing guitar on the Drifters’ ? On Broadway,? and had produced minor sides for LaVern Baker and Ruth Brown, among others, but there was really little to distinguish him from any number of other hopefuls clustered around the pop music scene at the time. But Spector was driven, single-minded, and stubborn, and he had a sound in his head. Now with his own label in place, he set out to record a series of singles he termed ? little symphonies for the kids? that are now regarded among the most distinctive and influential recordings in the history of pop music. Combining massed pianos, guitars, string arrangements by Jack Nitzsche, tons of layered percussion, and huge washes of echo, working with the West Coast? s best session players (including Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Larry Knechtel, Leon Russell, and Harold Battiste — the so-called Wrecking Crew), and leaning heavily on his engineer Larry Levine to catch all of this in the small confines of Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles, Spector developed his ? Wall of Sound? production approach, controlling every aspect of the recordings until, even though he wasn? t singing or even playing an instrument, they became — in essence — Phil Spector records. This is not to diminish the singers he used — the Crystals, in the case here. Already an intact quartet led by vocalists La La Brooks and Barbara Alston when they fell into Spector’s world, he ended up owning the Crystals name and inserting other vocalists — most notably Darlene Love — into the equation whenever it suited him. One can say, that? s the music business, and Spector was far from a huma… |

The Super Natural Plus is voiced specifically for dreadnought-sized guitars, where the combination of incredibly crisp Treble and tight Bass response will allow acoustic players to deal with real-world problems of feedback and muffled tone. The pickup is built into a plastic cover molded to look like dark-grained rosewood. It installs easily beneath the strings, with shock-absorbing foam lining the inside edges of the mounting brackets to keep the Super Natural Plus in place and protect the soundhole. There are individual adjustable poles for each string, and the built-in 12-foot cable is thin and light, constructed to be strong and durable. A slide volume control is included with the Super Natural Plus for easy adjustment while playing. EVH Wolfgang Electric Guitar – Black Finish $2999.99 From Eddie Van Halen comes an all-new guitar2;the Wolfgang2;representing over 35 years of cumulative EVH experience and expertise in guitar design. The process undertaken to develop the Wolfgang took over two years of intense trial-and-error research. The result is a bulletproof and beautiful tonal giant of a guitar that takes whatever you can dish out and then asks for more. As the VH tour kicked off in the fall 2007, Eddie pushed every aspect of the Wolfgangs performance capabilities to the absolute limit, playing various Wolfgang prototypes every night on virtually every song. Live Encounter $16.98 Trey Gunn played in enough rock bands in his formative ’80s years to learn how to become a star in popular music — and then did a 180 into the jazz/fusion thicket. Gunn graduated from keyboards to guitar, then bass to Chapman stick before discovering the customized Warr guitar (which he calls a “touch guitar” because of its tapping response). With progressive rock juggernaut King Crimson since 1994, Gunn’s Live Encounter CD goes even further outside of standard rock than Crimson’s excursions — blending Eastern and other world music styles with jazz/fusion rhythms and an against-the-grain attitude. With Gunn playing the ten-string and Joe Mendelson the eight-string Warr guitar, plus Tony Geballe adding electric guitar unorthodoxy on the opening “Dziban,” it’s deliciously difficult to discern who’s playing what over drummer Bob Muller’s 7/4-timed groove. Most of the early material is from Gunn’s outstanding 1996 studio CD, The Third Star, with a couple exceptions. “The Glove,” from 2000′s even-better The Joy of Molybdenum, literally showcases Muller’s leftism — the drummer plays mounted tabla drums to the side of his drum kit in the intro before providing a bottom-heavy beat for solos by Geballe and Gunn. Warr guitars are capable of everything from bass-like bottom and distorted power chords to the clean, Crimson-like intertwining lines on “Sirrah.” Another piece from The Third Star, “Arrakis,” features psychedelia by Geballe and Mendelson over Gunn’s monolithian lower-register notes and Muller’s clever, percussive arsenal. The tribal, snake-charming closer, “Rune Song: The Origin of Water,” beats the odds for any genre by featuring no solos over eight minutes. Clearly, these are virtuoso players who could play traditional jazz but choose to play more outside and emphasize the whole over the singular parts. High artistic marks and Gunn’s side job with Crimson allow the Trey Gunn band enough currency — against all popular music odds — for the occasi… |

Live It Out $13.98 In an effort to prove Metric frontwoman Emily Haines was not the only dominating personality behind the Canadian indie rock group’s first album, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, the second album hammers home the fact that it’s more of a group effort. Production duties were handed to guitarist James Shaw and Haines’ trademark synths take a back seat to screeching guitars and more cohesive playing as a quartet. Despite the added punk rock punch the guitar gives, the bite of their debut is dulled by a weaker set of songs, with only minor aesthetic changes to mask the slight sophomoric slump. Live It Out desires to be a major step forward (Emily Haines would release her first solo album, Knives Don’t Have Your Back, a year later), but the best moments on the album are the ones that recapture what made the debut such a compelling piece of ’80s retro — showcasing Haines’ trademark keyboards and her effective cooing vocals, which manage to sound both cloyingly sexy and gutturally raw at the same time. “Poster of a Girl” transforms a few rudimentary French lyrics and an unassuming keyboard intro into a spacy, groovy dance track. “The Police and the Private” is an effectively simple and haunting keyboard-heavy song that shows Haines’ best vocal performances are the down to earth ones (something she thankfully discovered on her solo album). As with Old World Underground, Haines has a tendency for collegiate-level prose when the band gets political, and songs like the “Combat Baby” knockoff “Handshakes” have a smug, elitist attitude about them, without providing much insight into their political beliefs. The first single, the hooky “Monster Hospital,” is a light-hearted punk song with great non-sequitur lyrics, but the overdubbed guitars and big production typically reserved for an alternative rock album don’t fight the overall motif of Live It Out. There’s a reason Haines was featured on the cover of Old World Underground and it’s possibly this: she’s … |

Lute-Guitar, 6 String in Lacewood $699 The lute-guitar is an attractive instrument of a similar size to the guitar but with a body like a lute. With a neck shaped like that of a guitar and a 51mm (2 inch) nut of ebony, it will appeal to those who are familiar with normal classical or acoustic guitars. It is tuned like a guitar with six strings, three of plain nylon and three of nylon wound in nickel. If it is to be used for lute music, the 3rd string may be tuned a semi-tone down to F# to enable the application of lute fingering. Spruce is used for the unpolished soundboard in keeping with original lutes and its soundhole has a carved rose in an attractive geometric pattern. In keeping with the lute, the characteristically bowl-shaped body is achieved by edge-gluing together slats of thin wood bent to a specific shape with no internal structure to retain its form. The overall length is 953 mm (37.5 inches) and the scale length is 648 mm (25.5 Inches), similar to a normal guitar. A hard case is included with this instrument. The lute has a long history dating back to pre-biblical times and although it has existed in many forms it may be classified as either short- or long-necked. The European lute and its ancestor, the oud, (or, ‘al’ud’ meaning ‘the wood’) are examples of the short-necked variety and were later developments. Examples of the lute-guitar, or some may call it guitar-lute, were plentiful in Germany towards the end of the 19th century and whilst it may be thought of as a type of guitar due to its stringing, six-course versions of the lute were also known in the Renaissance period. The term ‘course’ refers to the arrangement of the stringing. A ‘course’ may contain single, double or even triple strings, thus the guitar has single-string courses whereas the lute would be double strung. As with the German examples the lute-guitar has a bridge reminiscent of Baroque guitars with upturned ‘moustaches’ at the ends and pegs to retain the strings. It is best to tie a small stopper knot in the end of t |

Lute-Guitar, 6 String in Rosewood $699 The lute-guitar is an attractive and lightweight instrument of a similar size and scale to a standard classical guitar but with a body like a lute. In keeping with the character of a lute, the bowl-shaped body is achieved by edge-gluing together staves of uniformly thin hardwoods bent to a specific shape with no heavy internal bracing to retain its form. The bowl is made of sheesham rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo) that affords a warm, mellow tone. European spruce is used for the soundboard and, in keeping with the design of 16th-Century lutes, its soundhole is a carved rosette in an attractive geometric pattern which is cut into the soundboard itself and is not inlaid of different material. Most exciting is that the soundboard bracing pattern follows bracing used in world-famous Kohno classical guitars. The mahogany neck has a shape is similar to a classical guitar with a 51mm (2 inch) wide nut of ebony. The top of the peg box has a woman’s head carved on the top. Using standard nylon classical guitar strings, it is tuned like a guitar in e, b, G, D, A, E tuning. If it is to be used for lute music, the 3rd string may be tuned a semi-tone down to F# to enable lute fingering. The guitar is outfitted with smooth-operating gold tuners with black ebonized tuning key buttons. The overall length is 40″ and the scale length is 25 3/8″, similar to a normal guitar. The instrument has a satin lacquer finish. |

Lute-Guitar, 6 string in Variegated Finish $699 The lute-guitar is an attractive and lightweight instrument of a similar size and scale to a standard classical guitar but with a body like a lute. In keeping with the character of a lute, the bowl-shaped body is achieved by edge-gluing together staves of uniformly thin hardwoods bent to a specific shape with no heavy internal bracing to retain its form. The bowl is made of two alternating woods: Lacewood (Platanus orientalus) is a light-colored hardwood that has color similar to maple and has distinctive rays that provide what is known as a “beeswing” pattern. A member of the sycamore family, its timbre characteristics are similar to maple generally providing a brighter tone than rosewood. The dark-colored wood is sheesham rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo) that affords a warmer mellower tone. The combination of the two offers a blended timbre as well as a desirable look. Meek Warrior $10.98 The most beautiful thing about the Akron/Family, this collective quartet of New York musicians who record for Michael Gira’s Young God label, is that they are virtually unclassifiable. Is it rock? Post-rock? Acid folk? Freak folk? Free improvisation? Ultimately, who cares what it is, that it is is what matters most, and that is displayed prominently on this seven-cut “special album” (according to Gira). It’s over 35 minutes, and includes the nine-plus-minute opus “Blessing Force” that moves from silence to rock-out mantra, to chant to intricate polyrhythmic interplay to free-form, improv, wig city back to guitar, bass, drums zone-out to skronk. All you can say for a brief second is “Oh yeah,” before they enter with acoustic guitars, hand percussion and the paraphrased English translation of a Buddhist mantra on “Gone Beyond.” There’s melody and beauty and space and earth in sharp contrast to the fire of the previous cut. The vocals here are utterly beautiful and joyous and the spiritual vibe is set. Clocking in at only 3:22, it would have been interesting to hear what this might have been like at ten minutes. Alas. In any case, Akron/Family are up to what they do best here: shatter expectations, turn their own music inside out along with the heads of everybody listening. When they re-enter the known world it’s only for a few minutes, as the brief folk song that is the title track blends fractured banjo (hmmm Magnolia Electric Co?), guitars and four-part harmony, as well as the thrum of an electric bass for a few seconds. All the listener can say is “bring it on: more, more, more.” Those who dig the most acoustic side of the group will be more than blissed out by the rest of this set, which moves into droning, whole-tone psych-folk, sheer acoustic improvisation that is utterly melodic and into “No Space Is This Realm,” which gradually moves into overtone music on trombone, harmonium, and hand percussion . What is so ultimately rewarding about Akron/Fam… |

Reaped in Half (Acts I & II) $10.98 While every in-the-know rocker (and a few out of the know too) were trumpeting Tenacious D as the greatest band in the world, the hard rock/metal genre clearly needed to be turned on its self-satisfied head. Boulder, four guys from the Ohio suburbs, were just the men for the job. With the release of their epic concept album Reaped in Half (Acts I & II), these exuberant metal virtuosos stepped up and delivered the musical amalgam that the world had been aching for: classic Ted Nugent hijinks (sexual and otherwise) set to the multi-guitar attack of early Iron Maiden with just a bit of Skynyrd thrown in for good measure. At a time when every stoner with a Gibson seemed obsessed with Black Sabbath, Boulder reclaimed New Wave of British Heavy Metal’s fertile punk tradition as their own, which, along with a certain amount of Melvins worship, gives any loud rock band a leg up on the competition. Standout cuts from Reaped in Half (Acts I & II) are impossible to pick, as each tune is a finely polished gem, appropriately covered in beer, sweat, and other quintessentially rock fluids. But the shining “Free Bird” moment at the end of “Back for the Show” will have even the meanest metal-head crying big ol’ gator tears of happiness as the harmony guitars take to their elusive flight. When Jack Black and that other guy finally make it to their incarcerated, drug-addicted, thrice-divorced, C.C. DeVille-Behind the Music phase, Boulder will be ready and waiting to usurp the crown and take their rightful position as the true kings of rock. ~ Vincent Jeffries, Rovi |
