Is the slide bar required in guitar hero world tour?
I was just wondering if you can play through guitar hero world tour with the old guitar hero 3 guitar or if the new guitars slide pad is needed for certain parts of songs.
No, it’s not required at all. The slide bar allows you to play those “slider gem” notes, which are notes “tied” together by a thin purple line.
If you don’t use the slider bar, you can just use the regular fret buttons. You won’t have to strum on those notes though, so it makes it much easier.

Brother to the Blues $11.99 Tab Benoit has been doing his brand of bayou-fed blues-rock for some time now, and while it is tempting to call Brother to the Blues a departure, it is really only a subtle one, straying as it does to the country side of things, but again, only a little bit, and there is probably little-to-no-chance that Benoit will turn into a hat act with a big belt buckle anytime soon. True, he covers Hank Williams here (“I Heard That Lonesome Whistle,” with some vocal help from Jim Lauderdale), a touchstone for country if ever there was one, but he also pulls off a passable version of Sam Cooke’s soulful “Bring It on Home to Me,” takes a North Mississippi country blues approach on “Moon Coming Over the Hill” (featuring some cool Cajun fiddle from Waylon Thibodeaux), and ratchets into familiar swamp rock territory with the hard-charging opener “Pack It Up,” and the impressive, wry “Why Are People Like That?,” before tying everything together with the set ender, “Can’t Do One More Two-Step,” which somehow manages to be swampy, rocky, country, and bayou blues all in one package, as well as giving Benoit plenty of room to trade guitar runs with Thibodeaux’s fiddle slides. But there is a little bit of a change going on here — if you listen closely you can hear string band-style banjo on several tracks — and one wonders what Benoit has in mind for his next step down the road. There are a thousand ways to the river, as they say, but in the bayou the river is everywhere at once. There’s a little bit of that feel here. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi |

Jasta $16.98 Fans looking for a middle ground between Jamey Jasta’s output with melodic hardcore outfit Hatebreed and sludgy metalcore group Kingdom of Sorrow will find a great deal to love about the workhorse frontman? s solo debut. The eponymous Jasta kicks the door in with ? Walk That Path Alone,? a blistering, Hatebreed-inspired chug-fest that sets the pace for 11 more cuts that are equally relentless, even when the tempo slides toward the middle. A small army of guest appearances are peppered throughout Jasta, including some sublime caterwauling from All That Remains’ Phil Labonte (? Something You Should Know? ), Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe (? Enslaved, Dead or Depraved? ), and As I Lay Dying’s Tim Lambesis (? With a Resounding Voice? ), as well as some signature, snaky guitar work from Zakk Wylde on the brutal ? USED: Antigua $9.99 It’s clear that Tom & Joy’s hearts are in Rio de Janeiro, but they are comfortable (and far better off) when they blend the bossa with a wide palate of acoustic songcraft. Antigua, easily the most highly promoted album of their career yet released (it gained U.S. distribution through Tommy Boy), is also their most ambitious — and successful. Naturally, it begins in a warm place, with the Jobim cover “Meditation,” which Joyce Hoz? delivers caressingly while Thomas Na? m quotes several bossa masters with his guitar. After dispatching the Brazilian chestnut, however, Tom & Joy sound much more sure of themselves, switching from double bass to electric and replacing the strings with a brass section on “Imagina” and the title track. “Be Mine” is the highlight of the record, beginning with a horn arrangement reminiscent of Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments” that slowly slides away into space with help from organ and keyboards. The strings, as well as the Brazilian influence, return several times, but Tom & Joy show admirable presence of mind in not leaning on their musical mentors any more than necessary. ~ John Bush, Rovi |

USED: Copperopolis $9.98 Longtime Charlie Hunter associates John Ellis (reeds and keys) and drummer Derrek Phillips were soon to leave the fold after the recording of this session, but there is no sign of undue tension in this typically impressive set. The proceedings kick off with the hard rocking “Cueball Bobbin’…,” where Ellis switches from keys to sax and back as Hunter rips into some of his hardest rocking riffs, weaving around the other instruments like a prizefighter taunting his opponent. If nothing else quite matches the driving intensity of that track, the rest is immensely enjoyable jazz-rock fusion that plays far more to the jazz side of that equation. The disc was recorded in New Orleans, which might account for the spooky second-line rhythm of “Swamba Redux,” a taut concoction that features Ellis’ melodica on the opening lines, followed by his impassioned tenor blowing. These three play together with a loose precision that’s both slippery and rugged, finding a groove and riding it on material that slides through surprises and changes but never seems showy for the sake of it. The trio pushes into minor-key avant-garde territory on the opening of the title track, before settling into a dark bluesy shuffle somewhat like Miles Davis’ work with John McLaughlin. When Ellis blows dirty sax against Hunter’s growling tremolo guitar lines, the tune takes off to the stratosphere. It’s one of the moments that, even at close to six minutes, fades out too soon. Co-producers Hunter and Chris Finney often isolate the guitar in one speaker and the sax in the other, which provides a live feel and a vivid tension between the two instruments. The portentously titled “A Street Fight Could Break Out” is a surprisingly jaunty side trip; its walking, finger-popping bassline provides some of the album’s lighter moments. The closing take on Thelonious Monk’s “Think of One,” the album’s sole cover, is transformed by more second-line drumming and an Ellis tenor solo that sizzles. Most impres… |

USED: Imagine $9.99 Following on from the success of his sophomore set Shivers, DJ/remixer/producer Armin Van Buuren returned with 2008′s Imagine. More musically adventurous than its predecessor, the Dutch club hero continues to push the boundaries of trance to their limits on the set-opening title track. “Imagine” begins in, of all places, pomp rock, then storms into the clubs on battering beats and pulsing bass, but even after it settles into its groove, the majestic melody and synthetic guitar licks keep the excitement level at fever pitch. “Going Wrong” is just as inspired, New Romantic and new wave-edged but doused in house, with vocalist Chris Jones adding to the classic status of this obvious crowd pleaser. “Hold on to Me”‘s melody line initially soars like U2, but then the piece breaks towards synth-pop while Audrey Gallagher bounces overhead. It’s a stirring mix of wave, pop, and trance. “In and Out of Love” beautifully blends an angular post-punk rhythm with a New Romantic atmosphere, the latter emphasized by Sharon den Adel’s soaring vocals and creating a glimmering, entrancing piece. Ethereal vocals float over the coursing “Face to Face,” a number as beholden to its New Romantic mood as it is to its pounding beats; eventually, though, the number slides into house and even pushes towards techno. “Unforgivable,” too, has a house-y tinge and a wonderfully squelchy bassline, the percussion adding a dollop of industrial to the sound, with Jaren’s warm, sultry vocals adding heat to the number’s fire. “Never Say Never” adds elements of old-school house to the mix, as does “What If,” which also boasts a quite intricately arranged rhythm. “Fine Without You” increases the tempo and the tension, while “Rain” storms straight into trance. The set closing “Intricacy” is a roller coaster ride, skirting around gabba territory before shooting down into house and back up into trance, the insistent four on the floor beats driving the number to its ecstatic conclusion… |

USED: NO GUITARS 497 $6.99 Helium’s No Guitars EP uses plenty of guitar and features guitar-themed lyrics on three of the six songs. The band also experiments with several other instruments, including lots of synth use, a slide guitar, some horns and a flute. Mary Timony’s light, breathy voice singing fanciful lyrics about dragons and magic gives the EP a swirling, ethereal sound that at times has almost a Renaissance feel to it. The EP starts out on an upbeat note with “Silver Strings” and “Dragon #2,” which have more substantial guitar riffs. Then it slides into a quieter, more airy mode with “The King of Electric Guitars,” “Sunday” and the instrumental “13 Bees.” The EP wraps up with the droning “Riddle of the Chamberlin,” which is finally broken up by a guitar explosion about five minutes into the song. Although Helium is an amazing band, this is not their best or their most inspired effort. ~ Tracy Frey, All Music Guide |

USED: Sparks $5.99 Within the first track of their debut album — the crisp, minimal pounder “Wonder Girl,” featuring Russell Mael’s falsetto already engaged in swooping acrobatics and Ron Mael’s sparkling piano work to the fore, singing ever-so-slightly-weird lyrics about love that couldn’t quite be taken at face value — Sparks established themselves so perfectly that arguably the rest of the brothers’ long career has been a continual refinement from that basic formula. Even more striking is realizing how astoundingly prescient it was; what must have sounded indescribably strange in 1972 now feels like the precursor to nearly all of new wave, a fair chunk of synth-pop, and just about any music with a brain. As it stands, the original Sparks group, with brothers Jim and Earle Mankey on bass and guitar and Harvey Feinstein on drums accompanying the Maels, was as tight and accomplished as the classic Alice Cooper lineup, but given to their own brand of clever insanity (the fact that there’s a loud-rocking original on here called “(No More) Mr. Nice Guys” makes you wonder if that other band wasn’t listening in). Todd Rundgren’s production is generally spare but very effective, with snippets of cymbal and keyboard leaping out from the speakers at odd moments. The twisted, ’50s piano-rock loper “High C” practically invents Queen in both shuffling rock-out and heavy rockabilly camp phases; “Fletcher Honorama” slides and slinks along in a wickedly dreamy way; and “Slowboat” combines show tunes, cabaret, and rock to magnificent effect. With other songs like “Biology 2,” “Fa La Fa Lee,” and the brilliantly titled “Saccaharin and the War,” Sparks remains a wonderfully entertaining listen and an honestly unique debut. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide |

USED: THE BEST OF $6.99 Barnstorm, Joe Walsh’s first solo album after leaving the James Gang, garnered him fame not only as a guitarist but also as a songwriter. While it’s true that Walsh established himself as a late-’60s/early-’70s guitar hero on the Gang’s more boogie-oriented rock numbers, it’s Walsh’s love of lushly textured production and spacy, open-ended songs featuring both acoustic and electric guitars that is showcased here on this wildly adventurous and forgotten unqualified masterpiece. Recorded at the Caribou Ranch in Nederland, CO, Barnstorm reflects the big sky and wide open spaces. Accompanied by bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale, Walsh freely indulges himself with fat guitars and keyboards, beautiful choruses, country tinges, and pastoral pop hooks, as evidenced by the glorious opener, “Here We Go.” This segues, via the sound of a spooky lonesome wind, into the hauntingly beautiful psychedelic country tune “Midnight Visitor,” with elegantly woven acoustic guitars, fat carnival organ sounds, and — of course — the sound of the wind before it slips out the back door. And so it goes with the nearly Baroque psychedelic suite of “One and One,” which slides seamlessly into “Giant Bohemoth” (sic) and the rollicking “Mother Says.” Everywhere on the album’s front half, reverie and American mythological archetypes and history weave together, displacing the listener from the here and now. The openly pastoral country-tinged rock of the album’s second half signifies Walsh’s considerable gifts as a songwriter who uses his guitar as a dreamy, mercurial narrative device, as signified by the masterpiece “Birdcall Morning” — one of the greatest rock & roll love songs of the early ’70s. It is actually mirrored by the sadness and organic bluesy quality of “Home” and the unabashed pop/rock romanticism of “I’ll Tell the World,” complete with glorious four-part backing harmonies and a crunching guitar crescendo. Speaking of crunch, Barnstorm was also the firs… |

USED: WEIRD LITTLE BOY 498 $19.99 From the first ten seconds of this album, you know exactly where jazz masochist John Zorn is heading with Weird Little Boy, one of his many noise projects with Mr. Bungle singer Mike Patton. A Phil Spector-style drum intro immediately leads into some hissing noise, with squeaks and pops provided by Zorn’s saxophone. From this point on, nothing is sacred sonically. These are not songs so much as pieces of sound, and this is how the artist intended it to be. The music slides from casual guitar jamming (courtesy of Patton’s partner in crime Trey Spruance) to ear-splitting noise to the sound of someone choking to cartoon sound effects in a matter of a minute. The album is more of an experience than anything, and this is driven home by the wonderful packaging (which includes a booklet filled with poetry, text, and art). This is not for fans of jazz, or fans of anything really. This is a brutal noise experience for listeners interested in how far sonic technology can really be stretched and twisted. It is also very captivating music, and given time it can really sustain interest. Just make sure to listen to it when you have time to digest the whole package. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide |
