Action Figure Toy Collecting Alert – My Chemical Romance Action Figures are Worth Their Weight in Gold!

My Chemical Romance action figures are red hot! Since their release by SEG Toys in late 2005, the collectible prices of My Chemical Romance action figures have been rising faster than the band’s 2004 ascent to teen punk stardom. The action figures are no longer available through most traditional retail chains and where ever they do show up, they are being quickly snatched up by My Chemical Romance fans, collectors, and investor’s alike. According to one teen on a My Chemical Romance band chat site, “Just forget about it! It’s impossible to get these figures unless your parents have a truck full of money.” Well, she’s right! It is not unheard of for the entire band five figure set of My Chemical Romance action figures to sell for about $500.

Just as he does in the band, My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way is leading the band’s action figure popularity contest. According to the music action figure price guide at Rock-n-Roll-Action-Figures.com, the average selling price of the Gerard Way action figure is somewhere around $180.00. Wow! Coming in at a not too shabby second place are the Mikey Way action figures currently selling for around $120.00 each. The other members of My Chemical Romance have no reason to be disappointed. The Bob Bryar, Ray Toro, and Frank Iero My Chemical Romance figures are valued somewhere in the $55.00 range. Not a bad return for some figures that originally retailed for $14.99! For a lucky number of collectors, it get’s even better. One out of every 100 My Chemical Romance action figures released by SEG Toys were packaged variant figures. These stylized variant figures featured the band members as zombies. These zombie figures are typically selling for about twice the price of the originally released My Chemical Romance action figures. That puts the collectible value of a complete set of zombie variant figures of the band near an ice cold $1000!

The My Chemical Romance figures were originally released in 2005 at Hot Topic and Spencer Gift stores. The Hot Topic figures came complete with a “prayer card” designed by band front man Gerard Way. The Spencer Gifts figures included limited-edition Jim Dunlop guitar picks as an accessory for each figure.

Each My Chemical Romance action figure from SEG Toys stands about 4.75” tall and features 16 points of articulation. Accessories include a red handgun and a coffin for each figure…weird!

After veering sharply from the blues inluences of their debut, This Was, Jethro Tull’s sound quickly coalesced around jazz-tinged English folk influences and the antics of frontman/flautist Ian Anderson. 801 Live: Collectors Edition

801 Live: Collectors Edition

$44.95

801 provided Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera with one of his most intriguing side projects. Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players — bassist Bill MacCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson — are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with “Lagrima,” a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacy but smoldering version of “Tomorrow Never Knows”; it’s definitely among the cleverest of Beatles covers. Then it’s on to crisp jazz-rock (“East of Asteroid”), atmospheric psychedelic pop (“Rongwrong”), and Eno’s tape manipulation showcase “Sombre Reptiles.” And that’s only the first five songs. The rest of the gig is no less audacious, with no less than three Eno songs — including a frenetic “Baby’s on Fire,” “Third Uncle,” and “Miss Shapiro”‘s dense, syllable-packed verbal gymnastics. There’s an unlikely cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” while Manzanera turns in another typically gutsy instrumental performance on “Diamond Head.” This album marks probably one of the last times that Eno rocked out in such an unselfconsciously fun fashion, but that’s not the only reason to buy it: 801 Live is a cohesive document of an unlikely crew who had fun and took chances. Listeners will never know what else they might have done if their schedules had been less crowded, but this album’s a good reminder. Later reissues of 801 Live added two more Eno songs as bonus tracks, “Golden Hours” and “The Fat Lady of Limbourg,” tilting the album more toward the singer/synthesizer player. In 2009, MacCormick unearthed a tape of an 801 band rehearsal at Shepperton Studios 11 days before the show heard on 801 Live, and the recording was reissued yet agai…

 Growers of Mushroom [Bonus Tracks]

Growers of Mushroom [Bonus Tracks]

$19.98

Leaf Hound — like Killing Floor — was one of dozens of other working-class heavy rock bands who sprouted up in England during the British blues-rock boom of the late ’60s. They immediately found themselves in the shadow of better bands, including Led Zeppelin and Free (to name just two), which may have led to their short life together. They recorded only one album, Growers of Mushroom, which found its first release on the German-based Telefunken label. Somewhat surprisingly, however, the title track and the leadoff track, “Freelance Fiend,” were both left off that release. This error was corrected for the October 1971 release by Decca Records, but, by then, Leaf Hound had suffered from various internal problems and already called it a day. The album reportedly took only 11 hours to record in Mayfair’s Spot Studios, which may be the reason there’s nothing too special about this LP. Nevertheless, it has become a much-sought-after LP by collectors (mint condition copies have reportedly sold for as much as $1,300.00). Lead vocalist Peter French — who went on to form Atomic Rooster and later worked with Cactus and a later lineup of Randy Pie — is in fine form here, and his scorched-earth screech may even remind some fans of Robert Plant. His cousin, guitarist Mick Halls (who replaced Foghat-bound lead guitarist Rod Price, guitarist in French’s earlier group, Black Cat Bones), doesn’t have the same guitar prowess that, say, Jimmy Page had at the time, but he’s no slouch, either, showing considerable skill throughout. Interestingly, the song titles — like the band’s name — were taken from an anthology of stories by horror author Herbert Van Thal. In 1995, See for Miles released a remastered CD which featured a rarely heard bonus track, “It’s Gonna Get Better,” the B-side to their only single, “Drowned My Life in Fear”; some versions of the reissue also have “Hipshaker” added as a second bonus track. [This edition contains bonus tracks.] ~ Bryan Thomas, Rovi

 Movin': The Complete Verve Recordings

Movin’: The Complete Verve Recordings

$99.98

All eight of the albums Wes Montgomery issued on Verve in the mid-’60s (including the two he did with organist Jimmy Smith) are on this limited-edition, five-CD box set. With the addition of 20 bonus tracks (none previously unreleased, some of them alternate takes or overdubbed versions) and a 76-page booklet that includes readable reproductions of the original LP sleeves, it’s the definitive compilation of his work for the label. By its very size, of course, its appeal might be limited to completists and serious collectors. But its no-stone-unturned thoroughness can’t be faulted, and it sensitively separates the purest straight-ahead jazz material (all of the cuts recorded in 1965 for Smokin’ at the Half Note) onto one CD, as well as placing the Montgomery-Smith albums so that they’re heard in succession on the last half of disc four and the first half of disc five.Montgomery’s Verve period is the source of some contention among critics and fans. Numerous jazz authorities are of the opinion that Wes by far did his finest work when he operated with standard, straight-ahead small jazz groups early in his recording career, and declined substantially when he moved to Verve, primarily owing to increasingly commercial material and orchestrated arrangements. Most listeners with some open-mindedness, however, will find at least some material here to value — not just the all-out straight jazz sessions on Smokin’ at the Half Note, but also on the cuts with more pop-oriented backing. First, it should be pointed out that the pop and rock covers for which Montgomery’s Verve releases are most often derided — particularly “Goin’ Out of My Head” and “California Dreaming” — are a fairly small minority of the songs he recorded for the label. Of more importance, the combination of Montgomery’s always excellent guitar playing with orchestrated arrangements (variously by Johnny Pate, Don Sebesky, Oliver Nelson, and Claus Ogerman) actually works well much of the time. At its b…
