Yes you can. And yes you can practice without an amp. However, it should be noted that the acoustic bass is not as strong and you must connect an amplifier to play with other musicians. They also seem a little different from that of a solid base body. You can practice without an amplifier with a low solid too. It's just very quiet. But if you are practicing in your bedroom, it's pretty hard to hear.
