By the Dawn’s Early Light $16.98 Harold Budd’s discs tend to end up in the new age section of the record store, because his music is generally pleasant, quiet, and soothing. But where most new age composers go for the obvious (and sometimes saccharine) melody, Budd veers off into ambiguity; he also lacks the mystical bent that often goes along with the new age style. Instead, his compositional voice is more like that of a detached observer — one who creates beauty without getting too involved with it. By the Dawn’s Early Light finds Budd writing for various combinations of viola, guitar, harp, and keyboards. All of the music is lovely, but not all of the compositions sound complete. In several cases, they sound like raw ideas rushed into the studio before their time. Guitarist Bill Nelson provides much of the interest throughout the album, and the sighing, slithery viola of Mabel Wong lends an occasional turn-of-the-century salon feel to the proceedings. The only really embarrassing moments occur when Budd — whose voice sounds like an unfortunate cross between Garrison Keillor and Kermit the Frog — reads his own poetry. EP $9.99 Based on its length (just under half an hour), Will Kimbrough’s self-titled offering in 2007 is either a really short album or a very long EP. It is billed as the latter, and given how much session work Kimbrough does as a guitarist for country artists, it’s entirely possible he didn’t have time to put together more than these eight songs. They are enough, however, to whet the appetite of any curious listener and leave any serious fan salivating for more. Though the term “Americana” is the kiss of death for most artists these days (because it would appear to be a catchall that doesn’t fit anywhere else), Kimbrough’s music comes right from the heart of traditional American song forms: Appalachian balladry, raw bluegrass, hillbilly blues, rock & roll, and folk songs. The contrast between the guitars and cello of the bluesy back-porch “Eden Prairie” and the sheer folk waltz of “Interstate,” with guitar, mandolin, brushed drums, and upright bass, are two cases in point. “Horseshoe Lake” may be played on acoustic guitars, mandos, upright bass, and cello, but it walks through the same kind of singer/songwriter rock Bruce Springsteen delved into on Tunnel of Love — without the slick production. “Yellow Mama” is a shimmering primitive ballad with beautiful slide guitar and banjo work. It’s a prayer, a protest song, and a criminal ballad, all rolled into one. “Half a Man,” a midtempo shuffling acoustic ballad with a full band, sounds utterly lush in comparison to its predecessors. The closer, “Love Is the Solution,” with its lonesome strings and spoken word lyric, is a blues from a different era. Its message is profound, spelled out in simple terms that could have been written by Tom Russell, and shows his influence. Greatest Hits $28.98 Keith Urban had a rough go of it in late 2006, when the tour for his brilliant Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing was delayed fore health-related reasons. Urban has nonetheless been a road dog in 2007, and this greatest-hits package couldn’t have come at a better time. Covering eight years, these are not merely album cuts, but in most cases the actual radio edits of hit singles — album lengths are generally longer — so these are the actual versions of tunes that made country radio and the video channels, so it doesn’t replicate previous collections. From “I Told You So” and “Making Memories of Us” it goes right on through to the far more powerful version of “Days Go By” and “Where the Blacktop Ends.” The 16 catalog tracks top what is the norm for compilations like this, which usually stop at ten or twelve cuts. But there’s a bit more; a lot more actually. There are two new tracks that lead this baby off, and the first one’s a doozie. “Romeo’s Tune” was written by Steve Forbert who, back in the mid- and late ’70s, was the next up-and-comer on the songwriting scene (and who appeared on an early Cyndi Lauper video), who has been compared to both Bob Dylan and John Prine, but at the time, his brand of easy, open rock was far more refreshing than that of either of those comparisons. The song is a great fit for Urban, whose voice has just enough graininess in it to recall the original, but it also rocks harder. Urban is faithful to the original but lets his guitar do plenty of talking in the mix. This should be released as a new single to country radio and hopefully there’ll be a video coming to boot. The other bonus is “Got It Right This Time (The Celebration),” which was self-penned. It begins with a B-3 and a Fender Rhodes, a slippery drum loop, and one of those trademark, mid-tempo love ballad hooks that Urban can write all day long. The repertoire will be familiar to most Goodman fans, even casual ones, with its blend of his own intelligent (and often witty) compositions, a couple of tunes by fellow Chicagoan Michael Smith, and a few off-the-wall oldies.
