A Gathering of Promises $22.98 Recording for International Artists Records, the crazed Texas label that brought the world such acid-damaged visionaries as the 13th Floor Elevators, the Red Krayola, Lost & Found, and Electric Rubayyat, the Bubble Puppy seemed by comparison to be a beacon of semisanity — a rather typical psychedelic band of the period who seemed more interested in having a good time and cranking up the amps than in reimagining the size and shape of the inner cosmos. But that’s not to say they weren’t a good psychedelic band — the band’s best known tune, “Hot Smoke and Sassafras,” was a charging guitar-heavy rocker that deservedly became a hit single, and its flip side, “Loney,” was nearly as good. Truth to tell, those two songs are the most interesting tracks on the Bubble Puppy’s first album, A Gathering of Promises, but the rest of the material is certainly more than just filler — softer tunes such as “It’s Safe to Say” and the title cut show off the band’s surprisingly strong harmonies and folk-rock influences, while the interlocking guitars of Todd Potter and Rod Prince drive “Beginning,” “Hurry Sundown,” and the epic “I’ve Got to Reach You.” The Bubble Puppy could write and play like seasoned pros, and with the exception of “I’ve Got to Reach You” they had the sense to wrap up their tunes in three or four minutes, so that this album actually manages to end before it wears out its welcome. It’s not exactly a work of life-changing genius, but A Gathering of Promises is still a noticeably stronger and better crafted album than most bands of their time and place were turning out, and if it had enjoyed wider distribution (and another song or two as good as the single) who knows where they could have ended up. An Introduction to Chicago Blues $12.99 The golden era of Chicago blues in the 1950s and early ’60s came when the music was still essentially a powerful re-creation of the older Mississippi blues styles all done up with electric guitars, amps, and decent microphones. This was before the Chicago blues became codified by collectors and academics into its own subgenre, and tracks like Elmore James’ “Dust My Broom” (included here in a live version) with its explosive slide riff are clearly the Delta blues on rocket fuel, and there’s no denying the power of this stuff. This odd assortment of sides, many of them live performances, actually does a pretty good job of showing the diversity that lurks inside what is known as the Chicago blues, ranging in feel from Sunnyland Slim’s wonderful piano romp “It’s You Baby” to Big Joe Williams’ ragged “Baby Please Don’t Go,” presented here in a foot-stomping acoustic version. Other highlights include a live take from Otis Rush of his signature “I Can’t Quit You Baby,” Mighty Joe Young’s subtle (and then not so) topical lament “Hard Times (Follow Me),” the blasting slide guitar of Elmore James on the aforementioned “Dust My Broom,” and Muddy Waters’ “(I’m Your) Hoochie Coochie Man.” A fun and revealing set, full of a kind of joyous energy (even if it’s the blues) that seems to go missing in much of what passes these days as the blues. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi |

Casting Shadows doesn’t just borrow from the counterculture era — it lives it, from the “holy moly, I’m so stoned!” cover art to the smart packaging (which borrows its ideas from old vinyl records) to the songs themselves. Tracks like “Bruised Tangerines,” “Hamilton Park Ballerina,” and “The Autumn Chateau” are every bit as kaleidoscopic as their titles suggest, with guitar tremolos and Farfisa organs sharing space alongside the occasional sitar and harmonica. If Casting Shadows aims to be the musical equivalent of an acid trip, then frontman Justin Angelo Morey is the group’s Timothy Leary, leading his three bandmates through blues rave-ups (“That Little Girl”), swampy rock (“Running Through Your Mind,” a close relative to Them’s “Baby, Please Don’t Go”), and all the psychedelic stops in between. Of course, not everyone will love the Black Hollies’ dedication to an era that is possibly older than the band members themselves, and Casting Shadows could very well be criticized as lacking any sort of forward-thinking, modern sensibility. Complete Blue Horizon Sessions $31.99 It turns out that Britain’s best bluesman in the so-called white blues boom of the 1960s wasn’t Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John Mayall, Eric Burden, Stevie Winwood or any of the other obvious contenders. It was Tony Bennett, or Tony “Duster” Bennett to be exact, a one-man band who combined a ragged and raw punk energy with sly songwriting skills to produce a body of work unlike any other in Europe or anywhere else. Bennett played seemingly every instrument imaginable, from kazoo to piano (sometimes all at once), and his voice, although technically not impressive, was uniquely his own and he somehow made it a completely expressive vehicle. Duster released a handful of albums and some scattered singles in his lifetime (he died in a car accident in 1976 when he was just 28 years old), most of them for Mike Vernon’s Blue Horizon Records, and although his recorded work was critically well received, he never enjoyed commercial success. This two-disc package includes all three of Bennett’s LPs for Blue Horizon (Smiling Like I’m Happy, the live set Bright Lights and 12dbs) plus the various singles he released for the label between 1968 and 1970, and it makes for a steady delight, full of propulsive songs that continually take sudden, quirky turns. Keeping time on a kick drum and hi-hat while churning out a ragged, arresting rhythm on guitar and interjecting wild, horn-like harmonica figures between his vocal lines, Bennett projects an immediate, combustible energy that is impossible to ignore. His shuffle rhythms may be drawn from Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo (he covers songs by both men here), but he amps things up from swampy laconic to extremely urgent and creates a very real kinetic tension in the process. But his hidden strength is in his songwriting, which is full of wry humor and surprisingly sly phrasal turns that mark him as a true original. Dungen $17.99 Listeners who fell in love with Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes’ (Dungen) 2004 psych-rock masterpiece, Ta Det Lugnt, may find themselves in over their heads with this expanded reissue of the group’s 2001 debut. The three compartmentalized tracks take 40 minutes to unfold, descending in and out of a meandering traffic jam of ambient noise, tropical percussion, blinding sitars, soft flutes and acoustic guitars, lush vocals, and the occasional animal sound. Where Ta Det Lugnt hit the garage and turned the amps up to 11, this collection resides firmly in England’s trippy and pastoral Canterbury Scene — if Caravan had truly been as progressive as they thought they were, this collection of summertime anarchy would have been the launching pad for a million woodwind and Paiste gong-obsessed imitators. As directionless and “here are all the instruments in the room” as it is, one can’t help but be impressed with the moments that work. Opener “Stadsvandringar” introduces some intricate, blissed-out fuzz guitar and the lucid vocals of Gila Storm, parts of “Midsommmarbongen” sound like “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast”-era Pink Floyd superimposed over an Animal Collective number, and “Lilla V? nnen” — the album’s most consistent and spooky track — goes from the Moody Blues to Os Mutantes in just under three and a half minutes, before descending into oblivion.
